Why is the US not promoting CNG conversion on our cars? Other countries have been doing this for years?

I used to live in New Zealand for example and they have dealt with $4 per gallon costs for over 20 years; Why am I not seeing anything in the media about this idea?

  1. because of bush and Obama supports that idea so does clinton

  2. It would be a waste of effort. Natural gas is even less abundant than crude oil. Trying to power a fleet of cars this size with it would only cause IT's price to rise even higher.  We really do need to convert to a RENEWABLE resource.

  3. Infrastructure.   You comparably aren't going to drive very far in NZ compared to US/CA/MEX,...   It would probably cost quite a bit to convert every fueling station in NZ to carry a CNG nozzle, but North America is an even larger area.    If I want to drive my CNG vehicle to say Alaska from Florida I'd have to be sure there are fueling stations everywhere in between (unless the vehicle can burn both CNG and gasoline like some I've seen).   Americans are rather clumsy, accident prone people and probably couldn't handle the extra minute wait for the fueling or driving safely.

  4. We have been doing it for years, also propane.  Both are really only practical for fleet type vehicles, but in that service they are widely used.

  5. We have other uses for natural gas that don't require it to be compressed.

The market in the U.S. is very efficient.  If natural gas could be compressed to run cars more cheaply than gasoline the "evil greedy capitalists" would jump all over it.
