All the other countries are just called by their nationality - is there some reason why the American men use this name? I'm sure that other teams use such fanciful names at home....but for the Olympics, aren't they all playing for their countries ? Just a thought.

  1. because having the best players all on one team is what everyone dreamed of. michael jordan and larry bird, and magic johnson all on one team at the height of their careers was the best team in the world. and it just wasn't an america thing because it was a dream team for the rest of the world too. everywhere they went they were treated like rock stars. it just carried over to now. but that is the name that they go by it's more of a media thing.

  2. Traditionally, the US national team was composed of amateur players but a 1989 rule change by FIBA allowed USA Basketball to field teams with professional players. Because of this all-star roster of players, they were labeled as The "Dream Team" and won the gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. Ever since, they've been the most dominant team internationally, until lately which is why they have been renamed the "Redeem Team"

  3. because they're nba's fantasy team

    they're amazing

nba is the most famous bball league, so it makes sense that it would get special consideration

they're still team usa, but just known as dream/redeem team ;)

  4. becoz they are stupid

  5. because they dream of not being cheesy americans. They're good players though.

  6. the only true Dream Team was the 1992 team, it was the greatest basketball team ever assembled

    it was just a nickname

that olympics was the first time they could use professional players from the NBA

and the team consisted of so many champions, future hall of famers, and such great players the name Dream Team was so appropriate

That 92' team never took a time out, won by an average of 40 points and were the most popular players in the world

It was a running theme, that before every game the opposing team would pose for a picture with the Dream Team at half court

  7. Arrogance

  8. I think you'll find that commentators came up with this name the first time the USA decided to send professional baseketball players to the Olympics. Before that, only amateurs were sent, and the USA struggled. Now that it is an NBA all-star team (for the most part) they are the "Dream Team." I think they got beat last year, so I've even heard announcers calling this the "Redeem Team."

    It's all marketing...

  9. THis one is called the REDEEM TEAM, it's supposed to bring the U.S. back to the GOLD MEDAL in Mens' basketball.

  10. The real Dream Team was for the 1992 Olympics when they got all the best professional NBA players like Jordan, Byrd, Pippen etc. to play at the Olympics. I guess in 1996 it was unofficially the dream team 2... Then I guess in Athens they flopped and now its the redeem team.

  11. They have most of the best players in the tournament.

  12. i think , this is for the motivation purpose but it doesn't realty !

  13. Because it's comprised of our very best players.  As in, if you tried to dream of a good team, you'd come up with the same players.

  14. The first "Dream Team" was in 1992 Barcelona games when Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, David Robinson, etc were all on the Olympic team. They beat their opponents by an average of 40 points per game and taking home the Gold. Because of their roster and success on the court they were nicknamed the "Dream Team".

  15. They are known as the Dream Team because us poor mortals could only dream to be like them (uttered with tongue firmly in cheek)

  16. ONLY the 1992 USA Men's Team can really be called The Dream Team.

It was called that because it had(arguably, but really) the best players in the history of the NBA (and world).  (Seriously, Jordon, Bird, Magic, Malone, Robinson, Drexler, etc!!!!!)

It was the ultimate of ultimate All-Star team, plus one lucky college kid!

  17. The expression originated with the 1992 Olympics, the first time that the U.S.A. was allowed to use professional players, rather than strictly amateur. So it assembled the best celebrity players from the NBA, including Charles Barkley, Larry Bird, Patrick Ewing, Michael Jordan, "Magic" Johnson and David Robinson...the best of the best at the time.

  18. i wish the mlb players could play in baseball like the nba players can play basketball.

  19. Back in 92 when jordan and others were on the team it was considered to be a dream team, because most everyone was a super star in the nba and this kind of team, was thought to only happen in someones dreams.

  20. because they are soooo far up themselves that they believe it is night time and thats when most people dream.

  21. because u know it never not even once lost a single game thats y its called the "DREAM TEAM"

  22. This years Men's Basketball Team is nicknamed the "Redeem Team". They are hoping to redeem their reputation after losing the Gold to Argentina in the Greece. The "Dream Team" was only used to describe one olympic team that included Michael Jordan and many other great players.
