Why is the USA so rubbish at baseball?

All the best USA players are playing in the major leagues. The season is not over so they are not available to play on the olympic team.

Because the Cubans are prisoners in their own country and are not allowed to pursue a professional baseball career.  Therefore, most of that team is probably around 30 and in their playing prime.  The USA team on the other hand is made up of college kids and minor leaguers.  Their average age is probably around 22.  The best American players are involved in a pennant chase and did not go to China with the season on the line.

The Cuban players are good enough that 80% of that roster could make a big league team right now.  The USA team is made up of kids that aren't anywhere good enough to be playing in the majors.

In other words, Cuba sent their A - Team and the USA sent their D-Team.

How many medals does England have?   The Olympics are more than a baseball team full of 18 year olds playing pros from other countries.  Why is England so "rubbish" at brushing their teeth?

I would probably say the easiest answer is because our college kids are playing Cuba's professionals. Our professionals don't go to the olympics because of the baseball season. If we put our TOP professionals on a team, I am sure they could beat Cuba. And then take the gold.
