Why is the aegyptopithecus fossil primate, important from the view point of evolution?

Aegyptopithecus is important because this species is supposed to be ancestral to the primate line that led to humans and apes.

Aegyptopithecus is about 20 million years old, and was found in the Fayum area of modern Egypt.  Aegyptopithecus means "Egytian Ape".

I liked the Wikipedia article. Any remains found in such a condition to allow research are important.  ageypto are mostly found in modern day Egypt so that accounts for the name.

It appears that this species pre-dates the division of human kind and our modern primates cousins.

If I'm not mistaken I believe that I read that our common ancestor with the Chimp dates back to about 6 million years ago. Ageypto is much older and his discovery contributes to our historical record.

I find the subject fascinating and relevant.
