Why is the air in South Padre hazy?

It is the result of an air inversion that prevents the pollution materials from escaping into the higher atmosphere.  It comes and goes, though in recent years it seems to come more than it goes.

Quite a few areas suffer the same conditions, Las Vegas, Phoenix, LA, Roanoke, VA., the area south of DC in the Blue Ridge mountains to name a few.
