Think of any number, double it, add 6, half it, then minus your original number, the answer is 3. The answer is ALWAYS 3, ive tried this with countless numbers! Can someone please tell me why that is?

Thank you! :)

  1. Half of 6 is 3 your . your doubling your original number then halfing it (your back to your original number plus 3) then you take your original number away your left with 3.

  2. it's the "add 6" that does it.

    lets's say your number is "x". double it gives "2x". add 6 gives "2x + 6".

divide that by two, you get "x + 3".

    subtract "x", that leaves.......

  3. Well if instead of a number you use a variable, we will use X, the answer becomes clear.  The equation you stated is as follows:

    (2X + 6) / 2 - X = 3

When you manipulate the equation you get:

    2X + 6 = 2X + 6

Since both sides are the same, X stays the same.  You can take almost any equation with 2 of the same variables (X or Z or anything) and make it into a fun equation like the one you had above.  Hope that explains it a little bit.

  4. because half of 6 is 3.

  5. You are using the number that you thought of when you half it and subtract it so you are always ending up with the same number at the end. sorry, it's quite hard to explain!

  6. It is an interesting question and I tried myself right now. My number was 7 and the answer was for sure 3.

  7. Because thats the way it is... It is simple math and if you look at the figures hard enough you will find out for yourself...

  8. Cos no matter what number you chose at first you are subtracting it at a later stage. so it is the 6 that you add that makes the difference.
