Why is the area around Worksop, Nottinghamshire known as 'The Dukeries'?

I was driving down A57 towards Worksop when I noticed the road signs

  1. Dont Know, but I do know the area I have flying lessons in worksop. Pheonix Flying school also I visit the Dukeries Garden center realy nice place but In answer to your Question no I dont know! but why is anything called what it is other than to give a place a name!

    P.S if you have not been to the garden center then i would recomend a visit.


  2. The Dukeries is a district in the county of Nottinghamshire south of the town of Worksop, which is so called because it used to contain five ducal residences in proximity to one another. These included:

    Clumber House: principal seat of the Dukes of Newcastle

    Thoresby Hall: principal seat of the Dukes of Kingston and later of the Earls Manvers of the same family.

    Welbeck Abbey: principal seat of the Dukes of Portland

    Worksop Manor: a seat of the Dukes of Norfolk

    The Dukes of Leeds also had a seat here at one time.
