Why is the audio on my LCD HDTV sound so bad now that I hooked up a digital DVR from Cox?

Question

We had great audio from the TV when there was just a digital box from Cox. Then we switched it out for a Scientific Atlantic digital DVR and most of the audio now has a weird, scratchy, background sound. Some shows/channels do not however, so I'm wondering if it has something to do with my settings?

first make sure that the connections are tight, pushed in all the way and make sure that they are in the right spot

after that, try a new cable

if all that doesn't fix it, sounds like the new box is a lemon.
