Why is the blood taken in 2 different sites in culture and sensitivity testing?

We draw blood cultures to see if the patient is septic. The final report takes 72 hrs. The sample might grow out immediately, if that's the case, a preliminary report is made.

A C&S also helps doctors by listing what antibiotic the organisms are sensitive to.  Different antibiotics treat different organisms.

Two sites are used if a patient is running a temp above 101 or greater.  It is important to draw blood 15 minutes apart because  the first sample may not grow anything but the second sample may.
