  1. We draw blood cultures to see if the patient is septic. The final report takes 72 hrs. The sample might grow out immediately, if that's the case, a preliminary report is made.

    A C&S also helps doctors by listing what antibiotic the organisms are sensitive to.  Different antibiotics treat different organisms.

    Two sites are used if a patient is running a temp above 101 or greater.  It is important to draw blood 15 minutes apart because  the first sample may not grow anything but the second sample may.
