Question:

Why is the boarding pass checked a second time after the x-ray?

Somebody already checks it as you enter the line for the x-ray. Why check it again after the x-ray? What's the point? One time, I accidentally threw my boarding pass into the tray along with my wallet, cell phone, and everything. The guy behind the doorway made the operator send everything back through the x-ray machine. The people behind had already put all their stuff on the tables, so there was no room, and the whole thing was blocked. Everybody had to pick their stuff up, which slowed down the already arduous process when the guy could have easily picked up my boarding pass when it came out from the other side. Why? Just why?

  1. The secondary check is to make sure no one has slipped into line without ID screening (in the first version, they checked photo ID at the metal detector, ooh was that a mess).  They are not actually checking the pass information, they are looking for the mark the screener put on it when you entered the line.

The reason they had to run back the machine is that the screener at the MD and/or the XRAY is not allowed to leave his or her post.  Not a flexible rule, and someone else like a superviosr could have gotten it

  2. You'd be surprised at how many idiots try to get on the wrong plane.  The check at the actual boarding gate helps eliminate that.

It also gives the airline a count of how many people are on the plane (it's faster than waiting until everyone is seated and counting heads).  Number of people onboard affects how much fuel they have to load.  Maybe somebody got sick and is in the bathroom or something.

They also have to pull your luggage off if you don't make the flight.  So again, this helps them to know who is onboard, so they can do that.

Lastly, say you're flying St. Louis to Atlanta to Miami, and then home Miami to Atlanta to St. Louis.  If you miss your STL-ATL flight, they will cancel your ticket on the rest of your flights.  Collecting BPs helps them know when to do this.

  3. What's the  point?

Trust in God, double-check everyone else.

  4. its so they can check you in at the gate so they know who is on the plane and who isnt
