  1. they did not want the capital to be in a state (which would give that state extra status and perhaps extra political power) so they made it a District instead of a state.

  2. It is a compromise location agreed upon by James Madison & Alexander Hamilton.  Virginia and other southern states agreed to help pay the debts owed by northern states.  In return, the capital was moved south to the new city of Washington.

Several other countries, including Australia & Canada, have capital cities built from scratch as compromise locations between competing regions.

  3. Because people in Las Vegas don't like white buildings!!!

  4. Reason for Washington DC

Congress passed a law that gave George Washington the right to pick a spot for the nations capitol. Philadelphia and New York both have had the luxury of being our capitol up to this point. Washington's home, Mount Vernon was located on the Potomac and there was a confluence of the Potomac and another river 10 or 15 miles upstream. This is the site Washington picked for the "federal district" as it was referred to. As a representative of our new country there was a figure of what appeared to be an Indian Princess, which over the years cloned into "Lady Liberty". (not the statue). This lady liberty cloned or morphed into Columbia. Female representation of the USA. So.......federal district of the US as represented by Lady Columbia (Liberty) Washington (his city) (federal) District of Columbia (the USA), Washington District of Columbia or Washington DC.
