Why is the cat peeing and what do I do with the smell?

My 18 month old cat (who has never done this before) is now peeing right next to her litter box, on the floor, even though we just cleaned the litter! What's going on, and how do I get rid of the smell so she doesn't do it again? Is it a huge factor that we just moved a week ago?

  1. Your cat is probably adjusting to it's new home, and could be confused. If you're using a new type of litter try using the old brand again and see if this corrects the issue.

If your cat continues to pee next to the box, or if it seems that your cat may be developing symptoms of an illness (related to peeing) take her to the vet.

What type of flooring is the litter box on? Carpet? Tile? Wood? Unless your flooring type would be harmed, I would say just use some Arm and Hammer baking soda.

  2. She might have some sort of sickness or infection. (like a urinary tract infection)

    Take her to a vet.

  3. if you just moved then she is not used to it.

but to get rid of the smell, fabreeze is yummy!

  4. She is  telling you that she isnt happy  or that she isnt feeling well you should take her to the vet..

  5. It's possible that your cat doesn't like the location of the litter box.  I know that kind of sounds crazy, but when I moved my cat wouldn't use the litter box until we moved it.  She also started going outside the box when we got a new kitten.  Try moving the box to a different location and see if that works.  Cleaning the area with vinegar should take the smell out.

  6. Continue to clean litter daily.  Clean area with white vinegar.  Takes the scent out.

  7. Most female cats don't pee outside the box though, you need to take her to the vet asap to rule out any infection or illness, if no illness or infection, you need to spend some REAL quality time with her.  Especially since you moved.  Moving is really stressful for cats especially cats.  Spend time, play with her at least 30 min a day .  If that seems like a lot  then 15 min twice daily.  I have 8 cats and moved frequently untill I finally got married and settled so I have been through it ALL.

  8. Hi,

I know what boat your in. I was in the same one about a month ago. My cat had to get an operation b/c of a urinary track infection. But up until that point he would pee everywhere! Your cat marked her territory. Move her little box and to get rid of the oder use baking soda.

    Hope this helps. Ciao

  9. you can put bakind soda on it for thwe smell

  10. I agree with everyone else... the only thing I'd like to add is this:

DO NOT CLEAN WITH ANY STRONG SMELLING CLEANERS!  The problem is, even if the area's been cleaned, if there is a "residual odor" that the cat doesn't like, she won't want to get into the box to use it.

Generally speaking, cat's don't like the smell of citrus, perfume-ey stuff or mint.  Your individual cat may have her own preferences.  If you can't find anything that is odorless, after you clean the area -- wipe it down with some baking soda & water to get rid of the smell from the cleaning product.

    Good Luck!
