  1. To slow down your typing speed.

Back in the old days when they had the kind of typewriters that relied on threads and such, there was a problem where when you pressed enough keys at once or around a single point on the keyboard, the threads would stamp, latch, or get tied up together. This would actually be a result of typing too fast. To undo it, the user would have to manually and completely undo/reset the threads in the typewriter, which would collectively end up being a lot of wasted time due to this problem. So they rearranged the keyboard layout to what we know as QWERTY today so that they could slow down typing speed enough to solve this nasty problem with the typewriter.

The next thing you will think is "then aren't the modern keyboards outdated for that matter?" Yes, they are. Electronic keyboards will never have a problem with its user typing 'too fast.'

  2. It was originally designed to SLOW down a typer, so the keys would not jam together, on a Manual Typewriter.

  3. There was a tendency of the typebars to clash and jam if struck in rapid succession was a particularly serious problem, in that the mishap would only be discovered when the typist raised the carriage to inspect what had been typed. Sholes struggled for the next six years to perfect his invention, making many trial-and-error rearrangements of the original machine's alphabetical key arrangement in an effort to reduce the frequency of typebar clashes.

  4. That is based on science and research.

Do you noticed that A, E is located on your left hand, and I, O, U was located on your right?

Do you noticed the characters of verb (-ing, -ed, -th, -es) was designed and placed very near to each other?

It is meant for you to type faster.
