Why is the cost of electricity so high?

Paying 600, 700, or 800 a month for electricity, something is broken. The same people that we elect for office seem to be blind, unwilling or profiting from the high cost of electricity. Are these same officials being compensated so how at the expense of families? Someone has to have the answer or an answer to this question.

  1. Clean your air conditioner, get it looked at. that is the only thing that can cause those kind of bills.  Even in Houston.

  2. In my town is even higher. No solutions

  3. ummmm....do you ever turn anything off? even with the ac on in the summer we pay at most 150

  4. You may live in a region that relies on electrical production from natural gas which is very expensive.

A simple cycle gas turbine plant can cost $ 200/ megawatt and combined cycle $ 80/ MW.

Coal fired power plants on the other hand produce electricity at about $ 14/ MW and nuclear is around $ 6 / MW. All the resistance to nuclear and coal power have a real cost to the ratepayers that you will rarely hear about from the so called " clean " power movement.

I didn't quantify the cost of wind power because when we have peak demand on the grid the windmills are rarely producing anything. On hot still days the a/c units are running full bore and the wind is not blowing.

I am a power plant operator and monitor our multistate power grid and the price of production of all the types of plant on our system as well as our wind turbines so you can take this info to the bank.

Politicians putting restrictions on the type of power production allowed are the ones most to blame if you find electricity to be too expensive.

The price does vary by region so your local pols can make a difference in this area.

  5. Because everyone is too busy reinstalling Windows all the time.

  6. wtf where do u live

    i pay like 70 a month

  7. the question is why do you use so much?  What you need to ask is why is my electricity $.15/kW-hr, that's something you have little control over.  Now restate your question and tell use your price per unit and how many units you use.

  8. That is just "The Man" trying to make you conserve energy. Something is broken and it is probably your meter. You also need to make sure your neighbors are not plugging extension cords into your outside outlets and stealing your power.

  9. If you're paying that much for electricity, you're doing something wrong.

My bill comes to $110 a month during the summer (winter is $85 - $95) and thats with 2 ACs running on high for a large part of the day.  Prices have gone up because of the higher price it costs the companies to produce that electricity.  But if your bill is that high, you're running waaaaayyy to much stuff or leaving stuff on 24 hours.

  10. Wow! And I thought PECO was high. Perhaps you should turn off your cyclotron.
