  1. For static flag displays, the 'union' (upper left corner) is always forward, to show how it would stream if it were a real flag.  So, painted flags have the 'union' opposite each other-  for US flag, for example, the stars are upper left when seen from the left, upper right when seen from the right.

For some countries, of course, with symmetric flags, you don't notice this.

  2. If a real flag were mounted on the plane, it would flutter backward as the plane moved forward. The flag is painted on the plane to mimic this effect.

If the flag were painted "correctly" on the right side of the plane, it would seem like it was flying against the wind.

  3. Ken is correct. It's just like the US Army's uniform. Flags worn on the right side are reversed to appear to be flying in the wind.

  4. It is a tradition from sailing.  The flag would always fly backwards from the mast, and so is correct when viewed from the left and reversed when viewed from the right.

  5. ken is corrrect but it's just reflects our PC attitude.change things that aren't absolutely correct so as to be accepted.

i am more for the traditional way of displaying it.

  6. They are correct with saying that it is flying into the wind and that is why it is painted backwards.  But to add on, it is also supposed to represent always blowing with the wind because it is representing that America is always charging forward into battle and it is a sign of never retreating.  This is an old Military custom.
