  1. First of all, Georgians call their country Sakartvelo; Georgia is a name given to the country by Romance and Germanic languages. As for the origin of the name we call it, Wikipedia had this to say:

    1. Either the Greek γεωργος (which means tiller of the land) or the Latin georgicus (which means agricultural)

    2. From St. George. If not, popularity of the cult of Saint George in Georgia at least influenced the spread of the term.

    3. Names given to the Georgian people by the Persian empires (536 BC-AD 638). They were called Gurjhān which means "Gurj/Gurzh people." Early Arabic peoples called the people Gurz and the country Gurjistan.

  2. Well, sonny; sit your self down by the fire and get a hot toddy because the tales I am about to tell is full of intrigue, murder, mystry, danger, love and hate and spite.   Are you ready for it?

Because the last dude that wrecked havoc over that area, ruled and raped and pillaged and stole - his name was Larry(so all the blame went to his brother Gorgeous Georgina

  3. After Saint George.

  4. 1. Iberian King Mirian III established Christianity in Georgia as the official state religion in 327 AD.

    2. King Giorgi II Bagrationi 1072 AD (probably named after Saint George) becomes the fourth "King of all Georgia".

    3. King David IV Bagrationi 1089 AD (son of King Giorgi II) unifies the Kingdom of "Giorgi" or "Georgia" which means "wolf head".

The name was given by King David IV in honor of his father and the patron Saint George.
