Why is the difference in charge across the inner mitochondrial membrane important?

The charge difference across the inner mitochondrial membrane is due to protons being pumped across the membrane during electron transport.  It is the proton gradient across the membrane that provides the energy for the majority of ATP synthesis during respiration.
