Question:

Why is the drinking fountain giving out gray water?

In the place I work, we have a new (couple of months old) drinking fountain. It has never had any problems before, but just today I noticed when I filled my waterbottle up that it was cloudy and I couldn't see through it. My water bottle is dark see-through blue, so I thought maybe it was my imagination. So I plugged up the sink and poured out the water. And sure enough, the water was slightly cloudy and gray. With further observation I noticed that upon first putting the water in a bottle, it fizzes loud enough to be heard easily and clouds up, then settles. But is still tinted gray. Any ideas what's wrong?

  1. Maybe something got into the line. Dry running it for a minute or so to let it run out.

Sometimes local water companies will flush the water lines with a bunch more chlorine than normal as a cleaning process. Normally the lines have to be drained after that. In large buildings it is easier cause there is usually more water running in them but the occasional remote line may still have some of that in it.
