The weeds seem to be thriving. That's not fair.

  1. Okay, I wrote out a huge biology essay here when I realised that this could be explained very simply. Some plants are not native to [Australia], yes? Right, that means that they have not adapted to [Australia's] dry weather. Okies, now that's sorted...weeds ARE adapted to [Australia]. Hence they can stand the dryness.

It's mainly to do with the structure of the flowering plants/weeds. Weeds can soak up water from ground (because they're short....or some of them are), are generally monocots (different structure to dicots - most flowering plants) and therefore have different needs...and, yeah, here goes my biology lesson. I'll leave it there, but the main thing is the plants' different structures, and therefore they have different needs. That's the basics, anyways.

  2. Fair? AHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHA The weeds are smarter than you are, that's why.

  3. weeds just grow anywhere. flowers need loving care.

  4. Maybe your flowers are not native to your area. The weeds are. They thrive here too. This years growing season has been awful from too hot to too cold to no rain to floods we have had it all.

  5. the weeds have deeper root systems being able to reach water further in the ground. also it is more tollerant of drought. although its not fair, why do you think weeds are everywhere

  6. you need to use more mulch in the areas that are not planted and when you do pull weeds don't shake the soil off into the garden, it spreads weed seeds and can worsen your weed problems in the long run.

your choice of mulch can greatly reduce the problems you have with weeds. (i like pine needles)

a pre-emergent herbicide properly used will just about eliminate weed issues in many gardens.

    this time of year(august)

    ...here in zone 6b

    is rough

because it is hot and dry

and  anything you didn't get a chance to do

in the early part of the season

is likely staring you in the face..

.tapping its leaves on the window...

    .saying

    hey you gardener

what happened to all those big plans you had in March.....

  7. weeds are like roaches.. you can keep trying to kill it or leave it alone..either way they JUST WONT DIE! The weeds have to be taken out by the roots to prevent it from coming back. Just cutting them is like cutting hair..they grow. So, get a spade shovel and get down on your hands and knees and shovel them out. Get the hose and water your flowers in the morning when its cooler and at night. Not in the scorching heat of day.
