Why is the earth a closed system in terms of matter and an open system in terms of energy?

Earth is a nearly closed system in terms of matter since it receives very little (meteorites) and ejects even less (hydrogen molecules). But the sun is the major energy source for the earth so it is closed.

i always thought that when you die you become something else,not just dirt because everything stays within the atmosphere.your blowing my reincarnation theory out the window with your open system energy theory.
