Why does the gorse-racing industry put more emphasis on who the Sire is, as opposed to the Dam?

  1. If you knew anything they dont ,,

you see them sell stallions shares everyday

But have you ever seen a good dam for sale ??

    see wasnt that easy ,,

  2. EDIT: Thanks Rhonda H, my bad. I should have stated that AI was used for purposes outside the racing industry.

A good stallion can service (through artificial insemination) thousands of horses, at a great deal of money per service ~ whether or not it is successful!

A dam can carry only one or two foals at a time, must rest in between and needs space, care, etc, throughout the process.

Of course sires need good care too, but they can be 'milked' much more regularly than the pregnancy and birthing process can be concluded.

Because of the spectacular prices you see the stallions go for, the sire is always more 'glamorous' (money, lol) and it is easy to think that more weight is put on their line, but if you look at breeder's guides or even at the form in the weekly papers, you'll see both sire and dam are listed.

People interested in breeding seriously, for racing or for whatever reason, know both 'sides' of the family are important, and you will hear both sire and dam named from time to time, depending which is more famous.

    Cheers :-)

  3. Thing was only partially correct.  A Sire can service more dams, but the thoroughbred industry does NOT allow for artificial insemination.

  4. a large number of people in the industry believe that the dams side is more important than the sires, so its not sexist at all
