Why is the first son of the reigning mornarch of England becomes Prince of Wales?

All first son's become Prince of Wales for many centuries.Where did it originate and for what reason,some pact between the English and Welsh?

It resulted from the conquest of Wales by Edward 1 in 1301. He named his heir Prince of Wales.

The story goes that to appease the rebellious Welsh, Edward promised them a native prince to rule over them who could speak no English. He then produced his newborn son, born at Carnarvon Castle in Wales, as Prince of Wales.

Since that time, the oldest son of the monarch has borne the title Prince of Wales. It does not automatically go to the oldest son, he must be invested with it. For that reason, Queen Elizabeth was never named Princess of Wales, since, in theory, any son born to King George VI would have displaced her.

First of all tkbuilderman, Elizabeth II NEVER held this title.  There has never been a Princess of Wales in her own right.  There was some discussion with her father George VI that she should receive the title and be known as the Princess of Wales but he was the first to reject it based on a Princess of Wales can only be because she is the wife of the Prince of Wales.  Edward I created this title in 1301 for his son, and it should be noted that while it is reserved for the monarch's eldest son, it is not automatically given.  Elizabeth II created Prince Charles Prince of Wales when he was nine, she announced it at the Commonwealth Games in Wales.  He was not invested with the title until he was 21, on July 1, 1969 which was coincidentally Diana's eighth birthday.
