  1. Very interesting question. I think prior to the Declaration of Independence, newspapers were a way for the government to control the information the public received. By the time independent newspapers were published, dissenting views of the government were subject to liable suits. Freedom of the press was important to allow for free publication of ideas and views without fear of reprisals from government. Most newspapers nowadays often feature opposing views on most information. Third world countries fall behind in that freedom. Their newspapers are still heavily controlled by government. Hope that answered your question.

  2. It is the basis of your basic freedom. Without it any government would do whatever they wanted and you would never know about it.  It allows you to research and get information whether it's for or against. The laws that protect you allow you to write or say your opinion without fear of censorship. As long as it is not endangering people or defaming someone. It may not be a popular law but if it wasn't there for example, what would stop someone from banning certain types of music, speeches or movies because they didn't like it. Suppose you wanted to open a wind energy store and printed literature about it, and the people in your town felt because they all work for an oil company stopped you from printing information about it, or making a speech or even making a video. That's about as simple as your freedom of speech is.

  3. So people can find the truth is lies.
