They're not.  You don't need a digital TV, just a digital to analog converter.  And the government is giving you $40 to buy one.  You can get up to 2 of these coupons.  Analog is old technology.  If everyone goes digital, it will free up the analog frequencies for emergency services.  Everyone will be on the same page.  It will make it easier for everyone.  Plus, there are many "low power" stations that will continue to broadcast analog for a few more years yet.  If you get these stations, you might want to consider a converter with an analog pass thru feature.

  4. it is not the govt trying to get you to do digital. its the companies for the cable and the other one also. they want more money and they are doing this and frankly they can cause we are so much into the new stuff and what is going on with it and now there is 1080 stuff that is clearer when you buy tv and its true so i guess we're stuck.
