Why is the harbour bridge a huge part of Australian History?

  1. I wasn't aware it was a huge part of Australian history.  It did not have much impact on the development of the country.


  2. Because of its size and setting it looms large in everything seen overseas about Australia, but it isn't particularly significant to our history. It's just a bridge.

  3. Here are a couple of reasons:

    It is very big and takes a large part of the Harbour vista.

    It was built during the Depression at great cost. Opened under controversial circumstances.

    It is one of the largest of it's type (span) in the world.

    It linked North & South sides of the Harbour prior to that people had to take a ferry.
