  3. Belmont Park, and the Belmont Stakes, are both named for the Belmont family, who were the original sponsors and founders of both the track and the race. Elmont is the name of a town on New York's Long Island- it's a village, actually. The Belmonts were one of the oldest and best known families in the sport of horse racing- their descendants are still active in the sport. William Augustus Belmont III actually owned the Nursery Stud outside the Saratoga racetrack where Man'O War was bred and born, which is an indication of just how active that family was in the sport. The Belmonts were millionaires, and they provided the initial land and financial support which allowed Belmont Park to be built around the time of the Civil War. The Belmont Stakes itself is the oldest of the Triple Crown races- it was first run in 1869, and for most of the first part of its existance, it and the other two races were originally run as separate events. It wasn't until after the turn of the 20th century, following the first World War, in fact, that someone came up with the idea of combining all three races into a series. That's why the first TC winner, Sir Barton, didn't come along until 1919, when Man O' War was a 2 year old. Up until about a year ago, there was a stakes race named for this horse- but it was renamed the Barbaro Stakes after that colt died of laminitis in early 2007. Sir Barton would eventually go on to face Man O'War in a match race in 1920. It would be the last race for both horses, and it was run at Woodbine racecourse in Ontario, Canada. It's interesting to note that of these two horses, Man O'War was the only one who actually had a successful career at stud. Sir Barton sort of faded into obscurity- few people pay much attention to his story today.

    Hopefully, this answers your question.
