Why is the hydrophilic polar of the phospholipid bilayer facing outside?

  1. hydrophillic means it "likes water" hydrophobic means it dosent "like water"... the hydrophillic polar bilayer is on the outside like that so that it can bond with water.. because inside of the bilayer is hydrophobic and wont bond with water.. i tried to explain it as best as i could, i little confusing i know, i just had this stuff in college bio..


  2. The answer is in the question itself. Hydrophilic materials are "water-loving" while hydrophobic, from the word phobia are "water-fearing". Since there is water on both sides of the membrane the hydrophilic part of the membrane (the head) are exposed to the watery part, while the hydrophobic tail are arranged in that they are away from water. This is very strategic in the transport of materials.

  3. Because there is water on the both sides of the bilayer  - hydrophobic ends try to stay away from it and they turn against each other.
