  1. this is not a science question

  2. becoz all other nos. are used for for specific purposes like

    0 for std codes

1 for complaints in phone etc

2 every landline mtnl/bsnl start with it

and so on only leaving 9 so all cell nos. start with 9

  3. All mobile numbers in India have the prefix 9 (This includes pager services, but the use of pagers is on the decline). Each zone is allowed to have multiple private operators (earlier it was 2 private + BSNL/MTNL, subsequently it was changed to 3 private + BSNL/MTNL in GSM 900/1800, now each zone has 4-5 operators including BSNL/MTNL in GSM, and 2 private + BSNL/MTNL in CDMA). All cellphone numbers are 10 digits long, (normally) split up as OO-AA-NNNNNN where OO is the operator code, AA is the zone code assigned to the operator, and NNNNNN is the subscriber number

  4. The country code for India is 91. It is for all phones, not just cell phones. The country code is followed by city code.

Some other countries with country code that starts with 9 are:

    turkey   90

    India     91

    Pakistan 92

    Afghanistan 93

    Sri Lanka     94

    Myanmar      95

    Iran                98

  5. Why this question in Biology?

  6. okay. don't you like the number 9?

In UK they start with 7....shall we exchange?

this happened a few years ago, it was an effort to regulate and in a way country code cell phone numbers.

What about international dialling codes? So far USA  etc have the best starting  numbers, but not for long, can you imagine the big emerging giants, China and India, standing up for that second rate distribution of telephone codes designed by some silly European/American telecoms employee?? Time these lazy nepotists joined the dole cue.

  7. The government (specifically the TRAI) allocates cell phone numbers to various cell phone providers. '9' was chosen so as not to interfere with existing STD codes.

  8. as we hv STD codes to all over India starting from 91

  9. what???
