Why is the loosing sides trophy called the "Wooden Spoon "?

  1. It's only called "wooden spoon" if the loosing team has lost every match in that particular competition/cup..

    Eg... England loose every match in the 6 nations this year then they would get the wooden spoon!!!

    If only...

  3. "Wooden Spoon" is a phrase used to describe the "Achievement" of a team or individual in finishing last in a competition,a wooden spoon being a common and almost valueless object.

    The term originated from Cambridge University wherein Professors used to dangle a wooden spoon humiliatingly before students who had failed their tripos.
