  1. Imelda Marcos had over 1,000 pairs of shoes, over 500 gowns, and over 800 handbags.  She and her husband Ferdinand were the king and queen of the Philippines.  They were extravagant people who spent a lot of money on material things while their people suffered.  They were chased out of the country in a coup.  Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette did basically the same thing and were ousted in the same way.  The only big difference is that the Marcoses fled to Hawaii and Louis and Marie were beheaded.

  2. Ferdinand Marcos was president of the Philippines for almost 20 years, from 1966 to 1986.  He was the only President to have been re-elected for a second (and subseqent) term.  While Marcos did a great deal for improving the Philippine's standing as a country in the world, his administration is famous for corruption and graft and human rights abuses, and has been labeled as the second-most corrupt administration ever.  He was deposed in 1986 in a revolution, and died in exile.

His wife, Imelda, was famous for her extravagant shopping sprees in New York. After she and her husband were deposed, her clothing collection was found to contain 15 mink coats, 508 gowns, 888 handbags, and 1060 pairs of shoes. The Marcos' insisted that their wealth came from his gold trading, and not from government funds, but they were not believed, and her excesses are considered a hallmark of a corrupt administration.  In that, they are likened to Louix XVI and Marie Antoinette, for their seeming disregard of the poverty of their people and their opulent lifestyle, and the fact that they were ousted by a revolution.

Unlike Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, however, the Marcos' were not executed for their alleged crimes.  As a matter of fact, Imelda Marcos returned to the Philippines, where she has been active in politics ever since, even running for President on several occasions. She has been tried several times for graft and corruption, both in the United States and in the Philippines.  She has yet to be found guilty.
