Why is the mass of the products in fission and fusion nuclear reactions less than reactants?

I know mass is equivalent to energy. So energy is released some how. How is this?

  1. The missing mass has been converted into electromagnetic energy according to the formula E = mc^2  The frequency of each photon released can be determined by E = hf, where h is Planck's constant.
