  1. Because of World war one. Almost the whole entire region was under Turkish rule (they conquered this region for about 700 years forcefully). When the Turkish joined the Germans in WW1 and lost as a punishment its empire was broken up and split by the French and British. So your answer is imperialism. I recommend the book "The Great war for civilization, the Conquest of the Middle East" by Robert Fisk.

    PLUS...it is basically the cradle of civilization....
