  1. You'll see it turn reddish or orangy when it's close to the horizon, and the reflected light of the moon has to traverse more of Earth's atmosphere.  When it's overhead, and the air is fairly clear, it's more white.

    During a total Lunar eclipse, the moon will slip into Earth's shadow, and the sun light is refracted by the Earth's atmosphere - again, casting a reddish light on the moon, so it'll appear a deep blood-red.

    It's a good time to tell ghost stories....
