Why is the nozzle holevery much smaller than the gas inlet in the bunsen burner?

  1. The gas leaving the nozzle is at a high velocity due to a pressure decrease as it leaves the nozzle.

    The nozzle acts as a 'Venturi' which, due to the decreased pressure causes a partial vacuum at the Air inlet giving a pressure difference to below that of the atmosphere, so drawing in the combustion air.


  2. The function of a nozzle is to speed up the flow of a gas or liquid in a tube. The tapered inside of a burner nozzle speeds up and concentrates the flow of gas, making a longer, narrow flame which can be concentrated where you want it.   It also promotes mixing of the gas with oxygen for better combustion and more heat.
