Why is the peroneus tertius absent in some humans?

  1. It is an accessory muscle, not necessary for foot function.  There are several accessory muscles in the arms and the legs.  For example, plantaris is absent in about 10% of the population and the peroneus quartus appears in maybe 15%.  Could be an evolutionary adjustment or just a genetic mishap.
