  1. Protist Kingdom  is so diverse, we can study its characteristics effectively only by dealing with specific organisms. For our purposes, the protists can be divided into three large groups -- the algae, the protozoa, and the fungal-like protists.

    Kingdom: Protista

    I. Algae

    Division: Dinoflagellata

    Division: Euglenophyta

    Division: Chlorophyta

    II. Protozoa

    Phylum: Rhizopoda

    Phylum: Zoomastigophora

    Phylum: Ciliophora

    III. Fungal-like Protists

    Division: Myxomycota

    Division: Oomycota

  2. The real reason why the Protista is so diverse:

We classify as much of the eukaryotes as we can into Plantae, Animalia, or Fungi based on genetics.  Everything else gets thrown into Protista.

    It's the "junk" kingdom.
