I thought that, until now, government and military were mutually exclusive? Isn't this a good idea?

  1. Because they sort of all run each other .  Military being last on the totem pole .

  2. Because the military is overseen by the government.

  3. the gov oversees the military - The President is Commander and Chief of the armed forces...

  4. No the Government controls the Military

    Vet-USAF

  5. The military is part of the government.

In the U.S.A. it is funded and overseen by Congress, the President is the Commander and Chief, the military reports to the Secretary of Defense who is appointed by the President, etc.

U.S. military members are paid with U.S. Department of Treasury checks (if they don't have direct deposit).

If you don't have the government controlling the military, you end up with a military controlling the government.  Since the government in the U.S. is controlled by the citizens, this means that ultimately the citizens are in control of the military.

Who do you think should control the military?

  6. Go to the yahoo answers area, and ask over there... they may be able to give you an idea to the reasoning yahoo used... yahoo has NOTHING to do with how we run any governments... your question is about how yahoo sorted out the categories.

  7. The military is a federal institution, which is ran, financed, and maintained by our government (i.e. politicians).

  8. Because the military is run by the government... Honestly - the "Commander in Chief" of all the armed forces is the President.

  9. Because they both "power" the military. They are intertwined.

  10. The military is overall overseen by civilians, such as the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of each service, and the President.  Also, no major change happens without congressional approval.  This is to ensure some mad general doesn't go crazy and try to take over the country.  All general officer promotions and appointments go through Congress and are approved by the president.  General Petreaus wasn't just put in his position, he had to be voted into it by Congress.  The Secretary of Defense is also authorized to relieve officials that he feels aren't doing their job, such as when he relieved the Secretary of the Air Force and the Air Force Chief of Staff over the mishandled nuclear warheads a few months ago.  Since the government has overall control it makes sense to put the military under the government on Yahoo Answers.
