  1. Why are you taking this class ?- Read the book- All the answers are in it!

  2. Because human beings are social creatures, and social creatures require an apporpriate amount of interaction with others for their development. Children are especially dependent on interacting with other children and adults to learn about themselves and their enviorment. In US society, teachers are practically equal to parents in terms of their share of a child's development, given the time spent with each of them every day. Teachers help develop a child's mind, i.e. how the world works and how to think about the world. A teacher can help create habits in a child, be them good or bad. They also work as mediators between classmates, so they help teach important social lessons of respect, equality and justice at a very young age.

  3. Children are affected by their surroundings and the quality of care that he/she receives.

Children have basic needs that must be met for healthy emotional and social development:

    Love and affection

    Stability and security

    Praise and encouragement

    Appropriate responsibility.

Child care workers/teachers promote social and emotional development by helping children to express, discuss, control their feelings and develop socially and emotionally by providing relevant activities/experiences/routines within the child care setting.

It is important for the child's development of learning to recognise, name and deal with the feelings of others and to express their own personal feelings.

    Child care practitioners need to:

Be supportive and accepting of children's feelings

Show children that they understand how they are feeling

Encourage children to express their feelings in words, actions and through play.

Teachers help children to relate to others and it is important that adults are good role models.

By being a good role model child care practitioners can help children relate well to each other.

Child care practitioners can teach children about wanted / desirable behaviours through their own actions:

    Children who….

    - hear adults saying please and thank you

    - see adults acting in a kind, caring way towards others

…. are likely to copy this.

Behaviourist theory suggests that behaviour is repeated if children get  some type of reward; such as PRAISE.
