Because human beings are social creatures, and social creatures require an apporpriate amount of interaction with others for their development. Children are especially dependent on interacting with other children and adults to learn about themselves and their enviorment. In US society, teachers are practically equal to parents in terms of their share of a child's development, given the time spent with each of them every day. Teachers help develop a child's mind, i.e. how the world works and how to think about the world. A teacher can help create habits in a child, be them good or bad. They also work as mediators between classmates, so they help teach important social lessons of respect, equality and justice at a very young age.

Children have basic needs that must be met for healthy emotional and social development:

Love and affection

Stability and security

Praise and encouragement

Appropriate responsibility.
