Why is the show fruit basket called fruit basket?

i was just wondering why the show fruits basket is called fruits basket cuz the show is mainly about animals

One day, when Tohru was a kid, her classmates decided to play a game called 'Fruits Basket' where a kid would choose the fruit u would be called and when they call u up, u have to run so that kid would follow u and try to catch u. But Tohru was called a "Onigiri" [Rice ball] and we all know that a riceball doesnt belong in a fruits basket.In the end she wasnt called to play, and just sat there waiting her turn that never came. Basically Tohru feels that she doesnt belong anywhere and now she sees the same story with Kyo since its his the cat of 12 chinese zodiacs. Because the cat doesnt belong there. She can understand and feel his pain. So togethe, Kyo and tohru can relate to each other and now they are starting to know where they belong

That's why the story is called Fruits Basket., because u expect all to be fruits and in the 12 zodiacs u expect all the animals to belong there but the cat didnt... there's an ep in the story where Tohru talks about the 12 zodiacs animals and because of the rat the cat couldnt make it to someplace, I dont remember if it was a meeting or a party...

If you watch the episode where Tohru finds out Keo's true form, there's a part in the episode where you see all these kids running around yelling the names of different fruits and Tohru says that when she played she was always the rice bowl. And because the rice bowl wasn't a fruit, she never got called to play the game. That's why it's called fruit basket.

Because there's a memory of the main character Tohru where she's playing a game called fruit basket and all the kids get to be a fruit and when its her turn to be named a fruit they name her "rice ball" instead.  At the time she was happy to be called that but as time went on and the other kids didn't play with her she remembers thinking that rice balls don't belong in a fruit basket.  Its a very good anime.  I love it.

fruits basket is a kids game in japan as mentioned in the manga. When Tohru was little, she played the game called fruits basket. All the kids were given names of fruits but only Tohru was given the name 'onigiri' or rice ball. Then, as the fruits are called out, the kids stand out of their seats and join in with the other kids to have a good time. As you can tell, a rice ball is not a fruit and does not belong in a fruit basket, therefore Tohru was never called and only watched the other kids have fun infront of her. Im guessing the show is titled this because Tohru feels like she does not belong but she starts to find her place while living with the Sohma family
