  1. Written in 1862 by Wallis Willis, then an African slave in America.

    At the 1988 Ireland match in Twickenham a group from the Benedictine school Douai sang it from the gates outside, as they had been having a losing streak, many of the crowd joined in and it has been associated with Rugby ever since.

    I can't believe I even checked that out too, so hope it helps.
