Question:

Why is the spanish version of "U.S.A" written as E.E.U.U? What does that mean?

When the initials are written down reffering to the United States in english it is "USA" when written in spanish they are EEUU, this puzzles me and i'd like to know what the reason is and what it stands for.

  1. "Estados Unidos" is abbreviated as "EEUU" (also: EE. UU.) because in

    Spanish the abbreviation for a plural item doubles the letter of the

    abbreviation. The same is done, for example, with the abbreviation for

    "Fuerzas Armadas" (= Armed Forces), which is "FF. AA.", indicating

    that the abbreviation relates to a plural term.
