Why is the species Ulva (sea lettuce) so flat and thin??

  1. Im just assuming but....

    It might have something to do with surface area and allows the plant to absorb as much light and oxygen as possible to survive and grow


  2. The various species of Sea Lettuce occur at the lowest tide levels, and in rock pools, in areas constantly being washed by breaking waves. It never occurs on the steep marginal slopes, but prefers flat platform surfaces.

  3. Many Ulva species are only two cells thick.  This allows every cell to photosynthesize because each cell is exposed to full sunlight.  It also allows for direct transport of materials by each cell into and out of the water.

  5. It is morphological diversity. Flat structure gets it well exposed to sunlight for photosynthesis.
