Question:

Why is the stun gun more effective than the taser?

I recently asked a question asking the difference between the two. I've been hit by both, and the stun gun hurt me a LOT more than the taser did. Isn't the taser suppose to be more powerful? (Or the makers swear that it is?)

I took a 5 second jolt from the X 26, and don't get me wrong, I fell to the floor like a little baby, but I recovered rather quickly.

I also took a 5 second jolt from the Cheetah- a 1,000,000 volt stun gun, and I dropped to the floor with that, and the initial contact on my back was much more intense. I had a bruise on my back for over a week, and it took about a half hour for the throbbing feeling to go away. The cheetah stun gun was much more painful. Why don't law enforcement officers get issued these as well?

  1. A stun gun may cause more pain, but it does not incapacitate a person. A motivated attacker, or someone under the influence of drugs, can fight through the pain of a stun gun.

A taser causes a condition called muscular disruption, where you lose control of your muscles. This condition is involuntary, and an attacker can not fight through it.

  2. Because it is...?

Tasers are more convenient for longer distances. A police officer is more at risk when he's up close to a subject.

  3. Well... Taser X26 is 50,000 volts, vs your 1,000,000 volts..

The taser attacks the Central nervous system.. Not just where it touches like the stun gun does.. The reason you had a bruise is because all the energy went at the point of impact.. The taser goes from dart to dart.. The drive stun of the x26 is like a stun gun... You need to get separation for the best effect. Plus... I can shot my darts out 25 feet .. I don't have to get into close.

  4. Dragon is right.

I've carried both over the years. The stun gun requires you to be right next to the offender and it requires you to make proper contact with the stun gun.

The taser works from several feet away, and the probes go thru clothing and make the contact.

Both work well, but most officers prefer the taser.

  5. Theres a few things police departments have to look at.  First is the use of force continum.  simply, whenver a situation escalates, the officer is allowed to go one step above what the suspect is doing in order to protect self and arrest the suspect.

Next is that stun guns are CLOSE RANGE ONLY.  It is recommended to all LEOs to have at least 21 feet between the officer and the suspect.  The Taser has a range of 35 Ft, whereas the stun gun only has an arms length...

Then theres lawsuit.  Tasers don't bring about many lawsuits because they are safe and effective.  Stun guns (especually at 1,000,000 volts ) would probably be a lawsuit waiting to happen...

finally, the police aren't out to hurt people.  the taser is effective, and safe enough to where people won't get hurt as opposed to a stun gun.  Even you were hurt by a stung gun...think about what might happen in a hightened situation with adrenaline pumping!
