Why is the time zone on the west coast referred to as pacific time (PT) and the east coast eastern time (ET)

Simply the curiosity is that we of course have the pacific ocean on the west coast thus the time zone (PT) is appropriately labeled. So then why isn't the east coast time zone labeled by the initials of it's ocean

(AT)?

  1. The time zones are based on the entire North America, not just the United States.  This makes international trade with our neighbors (Canada is our largest trading partner, remember) much, much easier.

The Pacific Time Zone (PT) is named because it covers the part of North America that borders the Pacific Ocean.

The Atlantic Time Zone (AT) is named because it covers the most extreme eastern part of North America, but most of it is in the Atlantic Ocean.  None of the 50 United States are in this time zone, but several Canadian provinces are, plus the US territories of Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands.

The Eastern Time Zone (ET) is named because it covers most of the eastern part of North America next to the Atlantic Time Zone.

I would imagine that if the Rocky Mountains weren't there, and the land was flat, then Mountain Time Zone (MT) would be called Western Time Zone instead.  But, because it covers most of the mountains in North America, it's called Mountain Time Zone instead.

The Central Time Zone (CT) is located in the middle of all this as well as the central portion of North America.

West of Pacific Time is Alaska Time (AkT), and then Hawaii-Aleutian Time (HAT).  Do you care to guess where those are located?

  2. west coast time is called PACIFIC time because of the pacific ocean and eastren time becasue it's in the east
