  1. They are coloured by lycopene (one of the carotenoids), it's the same red stuff in pasta sauce that stains your clothes and never comes out.

    There are lots of plants that bear red fruits, they fruits turn red at the same time as the fruit ripens and the seeds are fully developed. It's a signal to animals that they fruits ready and aids in the dispersal of the seeds.

    ed. And one more thing, carotenoids are antioxidants, they protect plants from light damage, so they have a duel function.
