  1. Because "FREE MARKETS" work.  Those in other countries who have Government dictating the price of cheese or that only 2 businesses can sell shoes instead of anybody, you will remain poor forever..

The only way to have a wealthy nation is to allow free markets to grow and prosper.

  2. Well, diversity in what the country produces is what most of the textbooks will say, and that is true to some extent. But I like to look at the psychological aspects of the country too. Built on a premise that anyone can achieve their dreams, I thing to some extent it fosters greed even in the common man. We (US ers) are the biggest consumers on the planet and while we keep buying things on a personal level it keeps our economy bumping along. As long as we keep consuming things (Foods, gas, cars, plastics, that new video game, etc...) beyond our basic needs, we keep the economy growing, and thus we are "richer". Things that are made in the US help our economy even more because we are buying from ourselves. When we have to buy things from other countries it makes them richer. Because we have a diversified production (We have a lot of raw materials compared to a lot of other countries), a lot of the stuff we buy comes from our own country so the money stays here. That's my take on the whole thing. We simply can't stop spending money or we know there will be hard times ahead, so we keep going.

  3. well because the u.s. are free independent country and we are free from freedom

  4. There are a number of different pieces that go into the "richness" puzzle.  First, the U.S.. has an abundance of natural resources.  This allows companies and the country to remain relatively self-sufficient.  Also, while our publicly funded school system may struggle, the higher educational system (colleges and universities) are generally considered to be the best in the world.  This increases the value of our workforce.

Also, we are relatively uncrowded compared to the rest of the world.  this allows for self-sufficiency in food.  We also have one of the most productive workforces in the world, which means that we can make more product per hour which allows employers to pay more in wages.

Our transportation system is also among the best, allowing us to transport goods cheaply and efficiently.

Couple all this with a capitalist system that rewards entrepreneurship and you have the recipe for a "rich" country.

  5. Read the book: "The Wealth of Nations" by Adam Smith and you will have an answer as to why we became the wealthiest nation.

The question is can we remain so ...
