  1. if you think that's bad, wait till the USA and Russia go at it.  if you live in a european country, i'd leave.

  2. Russia the bully wants control of a very important oil and gas pipeline which passes through Georgia. So they took it.

  3. Well, the American "news" simply repeated the Bush administration propaganda, so you learnt little or nothing about the Georgia situation from the USAmedia. I blogged about it quite a bit, starting here:

  4. unitedcats2004 is incorrect about one important fact. South Ossetians are NOT ethnic Russians. They are simply Ossetians, and quite a few are ethnic Georgians. Ossetians don't even speak Russian. They speak a Farsi-related language. The Russian government simply issued alot of them some Russian passports to transform them into "instant Russians" as a pretext for asserting Russian military presence in Georgia to protect their "citizens".

This whole war is bigger than Ossetia or Abkhazia, or even that oil pipeline that Russia came dangerously close to bombing. It's about NATO. The US promised Russia in 1989, for their support for German reunification, that NATO would not expand eastward of Germany. Since then, NATO has added Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Romania, Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. Georgia and Ukraine are currently on the Membership Action Plan track for membership into NATO. The Russians are paranoid about NATO expansion, and they are demonstrating their contempt for what they consider a betrayal by the West by becoming overly aggressive with their neighbors. This was a bad gamble on Russia's part though.

  5. Because the Russians think Georgia is an American state. Also Putin is a notorious card cheat.

  6. South Ossetia is currently a region in the North of Georgia (right next to Russia) that declared Independence from Georgia in early '90s, but the UN hasn't recognized it yet. The Ossetian people don't wanna be part of Georgia. They held an independence referendum in which 99% voted for Independence. NATO condemned the referendum.

Georgia's president ordered a military attack on Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia, 1500 civilians were killed and 34,000 south Ossetians fled to Russia.

But Georgia is a "de facto" US protectorate and wouldn't mount a military attack without US / NATO approval.

Most important of all: South Ossetia is at the crossroads of strategic oil and gas pipeline routes, it's located right next to Russia and VERY close to Iran.

Needless to say the US is behind all this and Moscow accused NATO of having "encouraged Georgia" to attack South Ossetia.

Far from being a civil war, these events are part of a plan of a Middle East Central Asian war, including US-NATO-Israeli war preparations against Iran.
