Why is the water pump not working on my outboard Johnson 9 hp engine ?

it starts fine but their is no water pumping out of the pump it just spites a little water out what is the prob

  1. Thermostat or impeller>


  2. how long has it been like this?  since you got it?  done any recent maintenance?

    If it's been running like this without overheating then either 1) it doesn't have a telltale (not all of 'em do) and the spitting you see is normal, or 2) the telltale hose or nipple is clogged with insect nest or some other debris.

    If it just started doing that, then you should replace the impeller.

    If you've been running the motor without submerging the lower unit, that's the cause of your impeller failure.  Only takes half a minute or so to do serious damage.

    If you just replaced the impeller, then maybe you forgot the woodruff key, or a housing gasket, or maybe your water tube guide slipped out of place during reassembly.

  3. your impaler is destroyed you should take it to a repair shop as you don't sound like you are able to do this kind of repair

  4. have you checked the seals on it to make sure the vacum is intact? Also check the intake and make sure nothing is clogging them. start there
