Today I was outside when I noticed how beautiful the weather was in contrast to yesterday's thunderstorm. I noticed it always seems to be the most beautiful weather after a storm passes, why is this?

  1. the rain is like a cleansing kinda like when you shower it feels better afterwards!

  2. It's mostly down to airbourne dust and pollen.

During  hot still days, this drifts about and gets to altitudes that clouds form at.The damp air needs something to start a raindrop - and dust is what it needs. However this gets carried upward by the air currents, then it falls as it gets too cold up there. This carries on and builds a static charge within the cloud - untill you get a lightening storm to equalise the charge. When the ground cools due to cloud cover, the upwards cycle is broken - and it starts raining. the rain literally washes the pollen out of the air - so you won't get clouds for a few days untill it starts over again.

With wind added to the equation - the effect is started in one area - and finished in another - so hot moist air from over the sea, picks up dust overland and starts raining on it. In the UK this is the west coast as the moist air is from you lot and the gulf stream.

  3. Thunderstorms are usually caused by the passage of a cold front hitting warm moist air. After the front passes you are usually in the cooler, drier air behind the front. This isn't always the case but if you watch your weather channel you'll see that fronts often have a line of thunderstorms along them as they pass. Behind the front there'll be an area of high pressure (descending air).
