Why is the word esoteric so esoteric?

Why is abbreviation such a long word? How come impediment is so hard to pronounce? Does anyone else have any examples of other words like this?

  2. Why does the word 'lisp' have an S in it? Why does the abbreviation 'www' take longer to say than the full phrase? Why isn't there another word for 'synonym'? Why isn't there an anagram of 'anagram'? Why do 'overlook' and 'oversee' have opposite meanings? Why is 'dyslexic' so hard to spell?  Why is it so hard to remember how to spell the word 'mnemonic'? Why is 'gullible' not in the dictionary? Why isn't 'palindrome' spelt the same backwards? Why isn't 'phonetic' written like it sounds? Why do 'flammable' and 'inflammable' mean the same thing? Why isn't there another word for 'thesaurus'? Why is 'verb' a noun?

  3. Not quite along the same lines, but as interesting I think, is the fact that 'the classroom' is an anagram for 'schoolmaster'.


  4. Onomatopoeia doesn't sound like a word used to describe a sound.

  5. typewriter is the longest English word you can type using only the top row of the keyboard.
